With the aim to tackle Fake News and misinformation through this one of the biggest chatting platform, WhatsApp has step up to limit the number of forward message from 5 to 1 at a time. To recall, the limit was Unlimited from the very start and was later limit to five.
Limiting of the WhatsApp forward to one at this time can be pictured to be of help to minimize the spreading of fake news and misinformation during this Covid-19 outbreak as much as they can. Having in mind that WhatsApp have about 1.5 billion active users on normal activities hour compared to how it must have skyrocketed this quarantine period.
The company noted in a blog post that they have seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding that are counted as “overwhelming” by users and “can contribute to the spread of misinformation”. Thus, it makes sense for WhatsApp to limit forwards to one chat at a time.
This feature is expected to be deployed with the Facebook-owned WhatsApp new update to help restrict users from a frequently forwarded message to more than one user at once.
Furthermore, it was only limited and not scraped off. This means that use can either copy and paste one after the other or use the forward message feature multiple times to achieve its goal of sharing to multiple people. The advantage is that the sender might get frustrated because of the stress involve and end up quitting his/her primary goal.
