100% Working Method to Unlock Bootloader for all Android Devices

Today, am here to teach you all on how to unlock any Android phone bootloader using Adb driver. The procedure is 100% working method to successfully unlock bootloader for all Android device, provided it is unlockable. This procedure i will be showing requires computer (either windows, Mac or Linux).

What is Bootloader? and what benefits will someone get by unlocking it?

Bootloader is a program that starts whenever a device is powered on to activate the right operating system. It is therefore not only a trait reserved to Android, but also one that can be find out all devices with an operating, be it a smartphone, a tablet, a PC etc.

As for the benefits, the only benefit i can say about unlocking bootloader is being able root and install custom roms. Notably, anything that has advantage must have disadvantage. Bootloader unlocks can cause the loss of warranty. If you still want to continue with bootloader unlocking, kindly read along.

Although the topic of this post noted that every Android phone bootloader can be unlock, but some phones where strictly locked by the company. It requires users of this specific phones to request for the file to unlock the bootloader directly from the official phone site/forum.

Devices that Support Bootloader Unlock

All Android bootloader can be successfully unlocked using this procedure except the below devices;

  • Newer Snapdragon U.S. models on Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8 Plus, Note 8, S9, and S9 Plus all have locked bootloaders and there is NO WAY to unlock the bootloader on those. 
  • Almost all the LG, HTC, Huawei, Motorla, and Xiaomi devices require the user to get unlock code through their website to unlock the bootloader.

Apart from the above smartphone brands, all other Android smartphones bootloader can be unlock.

How to Unlock Bootloader Using ADB Drivers

Warning!!! Unlocking bootloader will ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR ANDROID!  Backup anything important before preceding.

Step 1. Goto  your Android phone Settings->About Phone and tap on the “Build number” about 5-7 times repeatedly.

You will see a message noted “You are now a developer” or “Developer mode has been turned ON”.

Step 2. Click the back button once(or twice) and you will see a new menu option called, “Developer options”, click on it to open.

Step 3. Once opened via the “Developer Options” , toggle ONOEM Unlocking”. (please skip this option if you don’t see it on your phone).

Step 4. Now, Open your computer and Download fastboot.zip and ADB Drivers ( note: for Windows only, You must install USB Driver in other to run this — You can checkout here). None of this drivers are needed for Mac or Linux).

Once downloaded, unzip/extract all files to “fastboot” folder in your “Downloads” directory (or your own specific folder and note it down).

Step 5. For Windows users, run the ADB Driver program you just extracted and plugin your phone using USB cable. (Note: your phone must be on). This will work for all Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10. ( Mac or Linux, can skip this step).

Step 6. A pop-up window will appear on your phone, asking you to “Allow USB debugging”, make sure to tap on “OK”. You are now 30% ready to go on with the bootloader unlocking.

Step 7. For Windows users, open a command prompt by typing “cmd” in the Windows search bar (usually on the bottom left of all windows). For Mac or Linux, open a terminal.  If you don’t know how to do this, you can Google it.

Next is making use of your computer keyboard to type the following commands;

For Windows:

  • cd Downloads
  • cd fastboot
  • adb reboot bootloader

Note: “Downloads”  is where you extracted the downloaded Adb drivers (type your own folder name if you used different folder)

For Mac:

  • cd Downloads
  • cd fastboot
  • chmod 755 *
  • ./adb-mac reboot bootloader

Note: The “chmod” command is required to change file permissions on both Mac or Linux before you can execute them.

For Linux:

  • cd Downloads
  • cd fastboot
  • chmod 755 *
  • sudo ./adb-linux reboot bootloader

Note: The “sudo” is required if you are running your Linux system as a user.  You can also simply type, “sudo -i” to enter root mode then you don’t have to type sudo in front.

Step 8. Now let’s unlock the bootloader with either of this command, “fastboot oem unlock” OR “fastboot flashing unlock”.  It doesn’t hurt to try either but one of them will unlock the bootloader.  This is due to the newer fastboot commands on newer phones.

Type the following.

For Windows:

fastboot oem unlock
or
fastboot flashing unlock

For Mac:

./fastboot-mac oem unlock
or
./fastboot-mac flashing unlock

For Linux:

sudo ./fastboot-linux oem unlock
or
sudo ./fastboot-linux flashing unlock

You will see a message on your Android device asking to “Unlock bootloader”. Use the volume keys to select “Yes” then hit the Power button and this will unlock your Android.

Your Android device will reboot but if it doesn’t, use the bootloader menus and select, “Start” to reboot your Android.

Step 9. Wait for few minutes for your Android device to boot fully.

Step 10. You should see a welcome screen just like the first day you bought your Android device.  Congratulations, you have successfully unlocked the bootloader, ready to root your Android!
